BEGINNINGS

I grew up on a cotton and tobacco farm in Piedmont North Carolina. Surrounded by nature in my early life, I developed a lifelong interest for vernacular, primitive architecture amid forests, expansive fields and lorded skies.

The inner patchwork of a painting brings all of these elements together. My goal is to achieve harmony through stylistic design amplified by color notes. .

MY MID-LIFE AWAKENING

At 37 (30 years ago), I returned to University of Central Florida to further study art. For the next 4 years, I immersed myself in the structure and tonal language of drawing, then painting, the elements of design, and a thorough investigation of art history. Every artist uses the study of other’s works to build a foundation of their signature style and technique.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I hold a bachelor of arts degree in Economics from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

Further studies in art came from workshops with leading painters throughout the country.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My interest lies in transcribing a visual record of North Carolina byways and back roads. I intend to blend interesting palettes that draw in the viewer. I’m not concerned with complete accuracy, but again with simply showcasing a rural scene, a barn, and its surrounding environs. Something that appeals to me. Academicians argue artists shouldn’t paint from passion. I disagree.

I believe a good painting doesn’t require shock value, or political messages; I am a storyteller of unvarnished earth and a disciple of Andy Warhol’s famous statement: “I think having land and not ruining it is the most beautiful art anybody could ever want. “

I explore shape and color equations aiming for provocative work.

I’m interested in conveying feeling through painterly strokes and color. My hope is for the viewer to feel a sense of familiarity with the subject combined with a calm clarity in my color patching. (The beginning and end of a painting of the small building at Tate Horse Stables, Blowing Rock)

Barns and the landscape surrounding these structures are emblematic of Americana soul and grit. Like folk music, many of these heritage masterpieces were built on knowledge passed from generation to generation, not a classroom of formal education. (If you know, you know)
